Graphene has served as a nucleation point for the study of a large number of atomic layers derived from non-graphene two-dimensional (2D) materials. The field of 2D layered materials and devices (graphene and beyond) is accelerating at a rapid pace and significant contributions have been made to the field by researchers in Europe and the United States. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together leading scientists working on graphene and beyond graphene 2D materials and devices from Europe and the United States to help promote future collaborations and address common challenges for this dynamic field. In doing so, it is envisioned that such an interaction should help promote synergistic activities in the future and accelerate research progress. Both continents have already invested millions of dollars in this field over the past few years with initiatives such as the European Commission's Graphene Flagship Project, or the US National Science Foundation's (NSF) Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation (EFRI) 2-Dimensional Atomic-layer Research and Engineering (2-DARE) initiative.

Amongst the research challenges in the field of 2D layered materials are: a) devising techniques that can enable the scalable synthesis of these materials, b) controlling layer number and exploring growth on multiple substrates, c) understanding doping mechanisms and optimizing contacts for device research, d) utilizing interface-induced novel effects in planar and vertical heterostructures, e) developing predictive modeling and simulation techniques, and f) devising in situ and ex situ characterization techniques to measure material properties. The objective of this workshop is to provide an open technical forum that brings together leading researchers from the US and Europe to discuss cutting-edge research in the areas (a) – (f) outlined above, and help catalyze future joint collaborations.
