Martine Ceberio, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at The University of Texas at El Paso, has been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation(NSF) Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award. NSF presents the CAREER award annually to junior faculty members who are likely to become academic leaders of the future.

Ceberio’s project, titled “CAREER: Symbolic Constraint-Based Solutions for Real-World Scientific Problems” is focused on making problem-solving techniques more efficient and accessible by designing Numerical Constraint Solving (NCS) techniques that are better adapted to real-world needs. The project will also result in a new Matlab toolbox, expected to enhance the way users approach problem solving and appeal to more users.

The five-year $565,000 award will enhance problem-solving skills and interest in advanced studies for middle-school to undergraduate students. It’s also expected to enhance participation of women and Hispanics in computing.

“This is a highly competitive award,” said Dr. Eunice Santos, Chair of the Computer Science Department. “NSF CAREER awards are one of the most prestigious awards for junior faculty members. We are proud of Dr. Ceberio’s accomplishment.”
