College of Engineering Announces Gold Nuggets


Mr. Harsha E. Joesoef Mr. Harsha E. Joesoef has been named a 2008 College of Engineering Gold Nugget. Mr. Joesoef earned both his bachelor’s (1980) and master’s degrees (1981) in Civil Engineering at UTEP.

Harsha Joesoef is President and Founder of Repex Perdana International PT (RPX), a full range logistics services company (domestic, international, freight forwarding, customs clearance, information technology and warehousing).

RPX is the Federal Express (FedEx) sole licensee in Indonesia. The 17 floor headquarters is part of the modern skyline in Jakarta, Indonesia, where the company employs more than 1,500 employees in its various divisions. Its Gateway Center is at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Designed to support faster processing of inbound and outbound shipments, the Gateway Center has a floor area of 1,411 square meters and is intended to facilitate the use of efficient clearance processes and sophisticated information technology.

Dr. Juan E. Vargas Ortega Dr. Juan E. Vargas Ortega, a 1973 graduate from the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been named a 2008 College of Engineering Gold Nugget.

Dr. Vargas Ortega currently serves as the University Relations Manager at Google. He is also a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of South Carolina, where he teaches data mining, Bayesian networks, embedded and distributed systems, data structures & algorithms, programming languages, and operating systems.

His research interests include data mining, embedded systems, sensor networks, distributed systems and biomedical engineering. His research is published in more than 60 articles, several book chapters, and many conferences. Prior to Google, he was the Senior Academic Relations Manager for Microsoft Corporation.

He earned a PhD from Vanderbilt University, a master’s degree from Centro de Investigacion y Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politecnico Nacional (CINVESTAV-IPN), and a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UTEP.
