The National Science Foundation has awarded $150,000 to The University of Texas at El Paso for a project to improve engineering design and creativity in students.

Led by Dr. Noe Vargas Hernandez, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University, the project will address the use of TRIZ, an idea generation method, sketching, and a smart pen capable of recording audio and what is written.

“Senior design students will benefit from the exposure to these methods and tools while research data is being collected,” said Dr. Vargas.

Research will be conducted in the Laboratory for the Exploration of Advanced Design and Engineering Research (LEADER), a new research laboratory at UTEP directed by Dr. Vargas.
