The College of Engineering is pleased to announce Dr. Ricardo Pineda has been named Director of the Research Institute for Manufacturing and Engineering Systems (RIMES).

Previously named the Institute for Manufacturing and Materials Management (IM3), RIMES adds systems engineering to the institutes manufacturing focus. According to Dr. Pineda, “many of our industry partners are in the defense and aerospace sectors, so systems engineering is a logical progression from our manufacturing origins.”

RIMES plans to add research and academic programs to the institute’s industry extension services. “For nearly 15 years IM3 has successfully executed its mission of improving the competitiveness of the Paso Del Norte industry and manufacturing capabilities of faculty and students. With the advent of new technology, the global market and the trend towards a knowledge-based economy, it is of critical importance to expand the roles of RIMES to address the integration of technological systems that cross organizational boundaries.”

A native of Colombia, Dr. Pineda has been a UTEP professor for more than 2 years. He earned his Ph.D. in nuclear physics from Lehigh University and holds a MS degree in solid state physics. Before joining UTEP, he was a scientist at Bell Labs responsible for the implementation of new technologies in the AT&T network. He also served as Chief Technology Officer for AT&T Mexico, in charge of definition, development and deployment of AT&T network and services in Mexico.
