The College of Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso is gearing up for its summer 2009 engineering programs.

ExciTES, which stands for Excellence in Technology, Engineering and Science, is open to middle and high school students. Funded in part by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, approximately 1,000 local students will participate in one of 8 camps coordinated throughout the summer.

Students will learn about engineering through activities developed by UTEP faculty and graduate students. Activities include the design and construction of model cars, personal computers, cardboard canoes and others. Some of last year’s hands-on activities included building solar cookers with shoe boxes and aluminum foil and developing ways to protect an egg dropped from a 4-story building.

“ExciTES is a time for students to learn more than how math and science is applied, but how creativity and innovation are just as important to an engineer’s skill set,” said Gabby Gandara, Director of the Plaza and the College of Engineering. ”

Although some of the camps are held at local schools, one of the week-long camps is held at UTEP and is open to the public. The ExciTES public session will be held July 20-24 from 9:00am – 4:00pm each day. The cost for the camp is $125 per student.
