Nazila Hafezi, an Electrical Engineering Ph.D. student at The University of Texas at El Paso, has been selected as the University Outstanding Thesis for 2009.

Hafezi’s thesis, “An Integrated Software Package for Model-Based Neuro-Fuzzy Classification of Small Airway Dysfunction,” describes a developed integrated software package that will help clinicians to classify asthma severities using Impulse Oscillation data.

“Respiratory disorders can be difficult to differentiate,” said Hafezi. “Early detection of small airway impairment could greatly help with timely diagnosis.”

Hafezi will be honored, along with her thesis supervisor Dr. Homer Nazeran, at the Spring 2010 Honors Convocation. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 18 in UTEP’s Magoffin Auditorium.

“I am very thankful for all of my professors in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UTEP who helped me with this part of my academic life. Unfortunately we lost Dr. Michael D. Goldman, one of my main mentors during this research, on March 18th of 2010. I wish he was with us to celebrate this achievement together. I hope he rests in peace.”
