The Concrete Canoe Competition challenges students to successfully design, test, and construct a canoe made entirely out of concrete. The event challenges the students' knowledge, creativity and stamina, while showcasing the versatility and durability of concrete as a building material.

The competition is scored in the following breakdown: twenty-five percent of each team's total team score is based on the engineering design and construction principles utilized in the creation of the canoe; 25 percent is based on a technical design report detailing the planning, development, testing and construction of the canoe; and 25 percent is based on a formal business presentation highlighting the canoe's design, construction, racing ability and other innovative features. The remaining 25 percent of the team's score is based on the performance of the canoe and the paddlers in five different race events: men's and women's endurance races, and men's, women's and co-ed sprint races.

The Concrete Canoe competition provides students with a practical application of the engineering principles they learn in the classroom, along with important team and project management skills, which are very valuable assets that can be applied in the students' professional career. Participation in competitions benefits students of the engineering curricula to get a more hands on approach to the engineering field prior to graduation. Also present is the opportunity to travel along with the team to competitions, this not only allows students to grow their network but it also creates bonds between colleagues that creates friendships that will last a life time. Join and give yourself the chance to be part of this ever expanding family.
