The University of Texas at El Paso, Czech Technical University in Prague and University of Zilina in Slovakia graduated seven Civil Engineering master students during the Spring 2012 Commencement Ceremony, in the first Dual Masters Program at UTEP.
Students from the participating universities are the first cohort of students in the Transatlantic Dual Masters Degree Program in Transportation Science and Logistics Systems launched by UTEP's College of Engineering in collaboration with the Czech Technical University and University of Zilina.
This is the first Dual Masters Program at UTEP. Graduating students from the Czech Technical University were Nela Blejcharova, Petr Malina, Marketa Vavrova and Jiri Tylich and from the University of Zilina, Jana Cervinska, Stefania Semanova and Ivana Simkova. These students received a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from UTEP and their home university.
"I can say that we gained valuable knowledge, being able to experience the European and American education. As UTEP and CTU alumni, we became more confident and independent," Marketa Vavrova said.
Alejandra Gallegos, a UTEP civil engineering student, also participated in this dual program. During the last two semesters, Alejandra was enrolled as a full time student in the Faculty of Transportation Sciences at the Czech Technical University. She will also be graduating from CTU this summer and upon her return to UTEP she will also earn a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering.
"The successful implementation of this new program is the result of a 4-year collaboration between thesis supervisors and cross continental supervision of students" Dr. Ruey (Kelvin) Cheu said, Associate Professor, Civil Engineering Department. "This program also represents our College's effort to engage in international collaboration to provide study abroad opportunities for our students as well as for students of other countries" he added.
