ExciTES Offers Experience to Students
May 17, 2016
The College of Engineering will be offering the annual ExciTES Summer program for students in 3rd to 11th grade. Students will have the opportunity to be introduced to a variety of engineering fields including electrical engineering, materials engineering, civil engineering, and computer science through inquiry-based, team-oriented projects.
The objectives of ExciTES are not only to create awareness of the divers fields of engineering and science, but also to encourage students to attend college, and familiarize them with the UTEP College of Engineering. As a result, students will have the opportunity to conduct experiments in UTEP Engineering laboratories and facilities side-by-side with engineering faculty and students.
"ExciTES is a great opportunity for students to get connected," said Gabby Gandera, director of engineering student services. "Whether it be by making friendships or by becoming aware of fields of engineering, students will be able to make better decisions about future careers in engineering."
All activities will be structured in a team environment where students will engage in hands-on and thematic activities, encouraging them to use their knowledge, imagination, and creativity, and apply their skills to traditional math and science problems.
To participate in the ExciTES Summer Program students must apply. The application is available online for students to submit their general information, their interests, and a personal essay. Applications submitted before Friday, May 13 will be reviewed and students and parents will be notified by email no later than May 16. Applications submitted after May 13 will be reviewed and students and parents will be notified no later than one week prior to the session start date.
ExciTES Scholarships are available to help reduce the registration fee. To apply for a scholarship, students must complete a 100 word essay incorporated into the online application.
