April 19, 2017

The annual Texas Rural Challenge is open to community leaders, industry leaders, and undergraduate and graduate students attending a Texas College or University to participate in a wide range of panel discussions, collaborations and opportunities aimed at Empowering Rural Texas communities. Hosted by the UT San Antonio Institute for Economic Development this year's challenge be held in Waco, Texas, June 29-30.

As a part of the TRC, the conference also holds the Texas Student Challenge (TSC), a competition that is held to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation among the Texas community. The competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in any Texas college or university. In addition to a monetary prize, winners will receive services from the Small Business Development Center Network to help aid with a future business venture!

To be eligible TSC participants must compose a business plan and presentation for a sustainable, for-profit venture that will benefit rural communities. The business plan should demonstrate the feasibility, resources around development, and the rural market(s) for the products and/or services provided.

Last year, a team of students from the University of Texas at El Paso placed second in the student business plan competition. Team members included Diego Mejorado and Gustavo E. Velez-Arce from the College of Business, and Monica Fernandez, Zuhey Monge and Madai Vasquez from the College of Engineering. Team leader Gustavo E, Velez Arce indicated that the activity opened his eyes to the importance of how interdisciplinary collaboration is indispensable to improve the quality of life of our communities.

All Eligible TSC business ventures must be a new, independent, for profit venture in the seed, start-up, or early growth stages.
