Energy Engineering Student Selected for Prestigious Fellowship

Sudipa Sarker a doctoral student studying Energy Science and Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso has been selected for the 2012 Gas Turbine Industrial Fellowship (GTIF) Program. The prestigious fellowship is sponsored by Department of Energy. Ms. Sarker is working on her doctoral degree under the supervision of Norman Love, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

The University Turbine Systems Research (UTSR) Program created the Gas Turbine Industrial Fellowship program to recruit outstanding students to industrial gas turbine design and manufacturing environments. The UTSR Program facilitates relevancy by promoting close interaction between participating universities and gas turbine manufacturers and gas turbine users.

The U.S Department of Energy Office of Fossil Energy manages the Advance Turbine Program to improve U.S gas turbine technology. UTSR is part of the Advance Turbine Programs that conducts scientific research to develop and transition advanced turbine-based systems that will operate cleanly and efficiently when fueled with coal-derived synthesis gas and hydrogen fuels.

The summer fellowship provides opportunities for outstanding undergraduate and graduate students studying in the fields of science and engineering to conduct research, engineering, and design in a variety of areas. The areas are state-of-the-art research that UTSR focuses on: heat transfer, combustion, aerodynamics, advanced materials and coatings, test and evaluation, thermodynamics, design, and manufacturing.

This is the second year in a row in which a student from The University of Texas at El Paso has been selected for the fellowship program. Last year's winner was Sudipa's husband Bidhan. Bidhan is also a doctoral student in Energy Science and Engineering at UTEP.
