UTEP to host Centennial Open House |
Since its start in 1914 as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, the University of Texas at El Paso has always had a strong presence in shaping the future of El Paso and its bordering regions. Originally starting with only 27 mining students, over the course of a century that number has grown; 23,000 undergraduates, graduates, and doctoral students are now part of UTEP's population, with continuing growth every academic year. As a reflection of its distinguished service to the greater El Paso community, UTEP has begun celebrating its Centennial for almost a year now. However, its biggest celebration comes this April.
Beginning on Thursday, April 10, UTEP's Open House will host its biggest celebration yet in its varied Centennial Celebration calendar. To honor its first 100 years, UTEP hosts and invites the entire Paso del Norte region for a campus-wide celebration spanning three days. With a theme of "Come and Discover", the 2014 Open House schedule features over 60 events by more than seven UTEP colleges to include the Colleges of Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Liberal Arts, Science, and the School of Nursing.
"This is the first campus-wide Open House we've ever had, and we think it showcases the programs we have here at UTEP," said Patricia Witherspoon, Ph.D., key organizer of the event. "It's also a chance to reflect on and celebrate UTEP's history… all 100 years of it… in a variety of interactive and exciting activities."
Events run the gambit from open studios and labs in UTEP's Art Department and College of Engineering to musical concerts throughout the campus and technological demonstrations in the College of Health Sciences. Visitors will have their pick of over 60 events that feature hands on activities and special tours to include the athletic facilities and the current campus transformation.
Free shuttle service will be available as well as free parking in the Sun Bowl and Schuster parking garages. There is no cost to attend the events and the doors open to the public beginning on Thursday, April 10 at 4 p.m. Activities continue on Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
