Grad Fair Benefits UTEP Candidates on Several Levels

Preparation for spring commencement at The University of Texas at El Paso will take a significant step forward during the annual Grad Fair from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, March 1-3, at the Peter & Margaret de Wetter Center.

Graduation candidates can shop for and order their caps, gowns, class rings, announcements and other commencement-related items during this event that also will give them a better sense of the strength and importance of the UTEP Alumni Association.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to feel and see up close the quality of the items that will mark one of the most important days of their academic lives. UTEP officials have created different packages that include free gifts and no shipping and handling charges.

"The main reason they will want to go is the savings," said Fernando Padula, director of the University Bookstore. He added that organizers also will provide refreshments and raffles of items to include a digital camera and a diploma frame. "This is a can't miss opportunity.

But finances are not the only reason to attend.

The fair's venue has changed to the alumni office to create a stronger connection between candidates and alumni. Alumni Association representatives will be available to discuss the value of being a registered member of the group that is an important cog in the institution's efforts to become the first national research university with a 21st century student demographic.

The Office of Alumni Relations wants to engage the graduates-to-be and start a dialogue that hopefully will turn into a beneficial lifelong connection. While membership allows them certain financial discounts, including 20 percent off at the University Bookstore, it goes beyond dollars and cents. Members act as mentors to current and future students, and serve as ambassadors among professional and academic peers.

"As they move forward in their professions or grad school, it's important for them to know that the alumni are behind them," said Richard Daniel, Ph.D., assistant vice president for alumni and constituent relations.

The Grad Fair also will include an opportunity for the candidates to answer why they selected UTEP, what their degree will mean for their future and obstacles they overcame along their academic journey. The videotaped interview will be used as part of pre-commencement activities May 14 at the Don Haskins Center.
