2050 Green City Design Expo Participants

The College of Engineering at The University of Texas at El Paso hosted the Imagine the 2050 Green City Design Expo which took place during Engineers Week, February 18-22

The main objective of the Imagine the 2050 Green City Design Expo was to raise awareness of the environment, and spark students' interest in a science and/or engineering career. Students had the chance to participate in the following three categories:

Elementary School (Grades 3-5) were participants submitted a drawing in which they created a graphic sketch / drawing or,

Middle and High School (Grades 6-8 and 9-12) were participants built a physical model land describe the different components which make their city 'green.'

Teams were encouraged to not only consider sustainability aspects related to water, energy and agriculture in their project, but also waste management, green spaces and transportation systems.

The goal of the Imagine the 2050 Green City Design Expo was to engage students in the design of a model city set within the Southwestern United States. A green city is characterized as an eco-friendly city, inhabited by people dedicated to minimization of required inputs of energy, water and food, waste output of heat, air pollution-CO2, methane and water pollution.

Approximately 250 students participated in the expo, and the top 20 teams along with their associated schools were invited to tour the College of Engineering. Schools that participated were Parkland, Cathedral, Irvin, Clint, San Elizario and Ysleta.

The Green City Expo awards took place at the Chemistry and Computer Science patio, Friday, February 22, 2013 at noon, with a special welcome from Dr. Richard Schoephoerster Ph.D, Dean of the College of Engineering.
