UTEP to Host Interdisciplinary High-Tech Startup Competition |
What: The University of Texas at El Paso will host a 3 Day Startup competition where students from undergraduates to doctoral candidates from various disciplines will generate an idea and develop it into a prototype by the end of the event.
When: 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23
Where: UTEP's Business Administration Building lobby and Texas Gas Service Student Center
Approximately 45 UTEP students with different academic specialties will form teams and be tasked with starting a high-tech company during 3 Day Startup, an intense entrepreneurial exercise at The University of Texas at El Paso.
These students, who range from undergraduates to doctoral students, will spend 53 hours conceiving and developing a prototype under the mentorship of top-notch faculty, entrepreneurs and investors. Among the project's goals is to build enough momentum to sustain the company beyond the weekend.
This interdisciplinary event will include participants from the colleges of Engineering, Business Administration and Liberal Arts who share an entrepreneurial spirit. It will provide them with the necessary resources to develop their ideas. Each team will have eight to 10 students. All activities will take place in the Business Administration Building's lobby and Texas Gas Service Student Center.
"We know many people with great ideas who fail to execute on them for a variety of reasons such as lack of time or money, no access to the right people, or not enough confidence to take the plunge. We provide all of the resources to bring an idea to life," said David Sterling, a College of Business Administration lecturer. He also is the adviser to UTEP's student Regional Economic Development Association, which organized the event.
The confirmed event sponsors are Rocky Mountain Mortgage, UTEP's Student Government Association and Kipp's Cheesesteaks. Planners continue to reach out for additional sponsors and professionals who could serve as mentors for the event that will conclude at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23.
Additional sponsors and mentors should contact David Sterling at dsterlin@utep.edu or at 915-747-7776.
